Behind the lines and colors : She lost her heart in the sea of love

NB-seaoflove02

I think I already talked about the origin of my 365 days I draw project but since this project seems to have a great influence on my current illustration style, it would not hurt to talk about it again.

I started 365 days I draw project in December 2011 right after I sent out my Sketchbook Project 2011 to Brooklyn Library (if you have not known about this sketchbook project, you might want to click here). The idea of waking up every morning thinking about what I would draw and then do it is really addictive. I like the feeling of fulfillment with a drawing done at the end of the day. So, I began to search for another challenge to keep me in such creative track.

Stephanie is one of the artists I admire. She was doing her own challenge of drawing everyday at the time and was kind enough to let me join in. The idea of the challenge was to draw a picture from one word. It was very hard at first but when you draw everyday, you get the hang of it and ideas come more easily. So it began my 365 days I draw.

Why is it so important that I keep referring to this project? Because before this project I drew differently. I drew directly on computer using mouse and then pen mouse. The results were crisp and clean and beautiful but it lacked ideas or stories to pull viewers in. This reminded me of all the design teachers who always say that your own hand draw best. It opens your brain, challenges your imagination and there is no technical tool limitation.

So, I stayed away from the computer and drew everything by hand. The fact that I didn't need to rely on computer  or technical stuff and I could just take a pen and a sketchbook with me and drew whenever and wherever I wanted to brought me more ideas and stories.

Then after some 100 drawings and everyday doodles on my facebook page, I found that I really enjoyed drawing. My lines changed, my use of colors looked different and seemed to be better than my previous works. It suddenly came to me that I finally established my new drawing style. :D

That kind of realization brought me confidence. I can see how my drawing can be developed into something more wonderful in the future but that will need time and hard work and I'm working on it right now.

Not sure if anyone feels like I do, that when you have finally set your goal, you have some kind of liberation too. I mean when you determine to do something,  you have more focus and less confused. Your life comes in order. Problems that come in your way will be fixed as soon as possible because you don't want to stay with them too long. You have your goal to meet!

I love the kind of idea, to have a goal. It makes my life busy, sometimes energetic, sometimes exhausted but with peaceful mind all the time :)

..................

The illustration above is developed from one of the 365 days I draw project drawings. The keyword is 'sea'. I'm not sure how the caption 'I lost her heart in the sea of love' came to me but I really liked the sentence and the idea of combining lettering and picture then happened.

The original drawing is done in black and red. When I put it in my stationery design, card and notebook, I made it look softer with orange and pale purple. I like both color versions. They both give the feeling of fun and whimsical, I think :)

How about you? Which one you like better, please tell me :)

Life in slow motion

pavinee-friend01

I spent the last 2 days away from computer screen and internet. Having a sore throat and low fever, I found that my body needed some rest.

Life without the internet was slow but not unpleasant. I could finish 2 books and some sketches posted here.

Sometimes being idle in work might make you productive in some other ways :)

No, I haven't dropped my friendship sketchbook theme yet. I guess my brain didn't work properly while drawing this though. I meant 'facebook', don't know why I drew 'me' instead :P But I think you get the idea :)

brown sketch

Hello. How are you today? It's only one day that I didn't blog but it seems I'm quite away from my blog. Don't know why I feel that way.

I am quite busy. Book layout job can take all your time. I almost finish one book and going to start the next. I enjoy doing it but just wish I could speed up my work for my shop too. I think ever since I participated in Art Every Day Month and The Sketchbook Project last year, ideas come to me more smoothly and easily. That's a good thing. I just have to make all ideas into real things.

By the way, I just got mail saying that my sketchbook got there already, those who are in the US please be prepared for the tour and don't forget to see mine!

Also, you can still play with me in One World One Heart giveaway until this Friday. Good luck!

my sketchbook (plus some secrets :-)

SKETCH-merryday02

No, I haven't forgotten my sketchbook yet. Although it is pretty slow, I'm always thinking about it :-) This week is a good (and busy) week. I have got five shop orders, one book layout and three book covers to manage. Plus two exciting things I have to take care.

One of them I cannot tell you yet because I'm not so sure about it at this moment. I think it could take months to be certain enough to tell the world (and it's possible that this thing will never happen too!) The other thing I think I can tell you as soon as tomorrow :-)

Too many secrets? Here's a hint for the latter: go and read this link. Browse around, enjoy and don't forget to come back here tomorrow!

Thanks for coming. Have a merry day :-D

Sketchbook Project 2011 : mission complete!!

pavinees-sketchbook2011

And now it's all done! My Sketchbook Project 2011 is all done! Forgive my repetition but I'm doing happy dancing and feeling so relieved now :-D I spent my whole yesterday drawing and coloring like mad, all 22 pages! I got really dizzy at the end of the day :-P

There are some pages that I don't quite like so I don't put them here but I have already uploaded the whole book on my flickr set for you to browse. The pages are not in chronological order as I jumped around through the book.

Now I think I will choose some of these pages and make them into digital prints or cards for my shop. What do you think? I have already done my most favorite : Savor the Moment and will show it here soon.

If you have time, please go and look at the whole book and tell me which one you like best. I'm really curious!

Thank you so much for all your comments. You really keep me going and please come back as I will continue another sketchbook project, this time of my own! :-D

In the mean time, I have just been given a Stylish Blogger Award from 2 lovely fellow bloggers, yeevon and Saralynnart! Thanks so much you guys. I feel so honored :-D

Basically, the award works like this:

• Thank and link back to the person that awarded me.
• Share 7 things about myself.
• Pay it forward to 15 recently discovered bloggers.
• Contact those bloggers about the award!

Here are my 7 things:

• I am a super sleepy person. I don't fall asleep too easily, not like that, but I can yawn all day and always have a look of Garfield, you know, with half-lidded eyes like this (-_-) Coffee just makes me sleepier too, really!

• I grew up reading Japanese manga and spent my time after school drawing paper dolls, mostly with same repeated outfits :-P

• I never kept a complete sketchbook. I could fill only half of school sketchbook and never colored in it. That's why I'm pretty proud with my Sketchbook Project here:-)

• I'm a book-buying addict. My speed of reading is far behind the speed of buying :-P Anyone knows any group therapy?

• One of my client once said that my work looked much merrier than my appearance (read the first one) -_-

• My favorite time of day is at night when I sit quietly reading or sketching or doing nothing :-)

• I love using my favorite mechanical pencil drawing on Caslon Sketchbook. Never use ordinary pencil.

I try to draw every night. There's still more I have to show here and 12 spreads to fill in. My mind already jumps to the next sketchbook. This time it will be my own project so that I don't have to part with it at the end as I have to for the Sketchbook Project 2011 :-(. I feel sad already but to think that more people will see my drawings, it's kind of exciting!

I should finish this book by the end of this week. I must, actually :-P

More pages for Sketchbook Project 2011. ^-^ The first one comes from my favorite quote;

Never be bullied into silence.
Never allow yourself to be made a victim.
Accept no one's definition of life;
DEFINE YOURSELF.

And the second one is a tweak of Thai characters.

I think everyone out there are enjoying the coming of the holiday. Hope you all have a merry Christmas!

I completely forgot about Book Beauty Monday :-P I think it has to be Book Beauty Tuesday for this week. Luckily, I still have something to post today.

This is one of the Sketchbook Project spreads I did last night. I think There are about 23 spreads left for me to complete. Hopefully I can make it! ^-^

Another spread for Sketchbook Project

The right page with red flower lines is not my drawing. It's a back side of shopping bag paper I used in Drawing Lab Challenge which is the book's next page. I just put on the extra lettering :-)

I think I have about half of the book left for the Sketchbook Project. One way to finish it in time is to draw everyday. Hope I can make it!

Savor the Moment

pavinee_SKETCH12

I think this spread is eligible for Illustration Friday's this week topic which is 'savor'. It's also another spread for my Sketchbook Project ;-) There's only a few weeks left and I'm beginning to get nervous :-P

What do you think about my barbecue drawing. I think it doesn't look like barbecue but I cannot undo it now :-(
I love doing the pink lettering though. It's fun!

Drawing Lab Challenge : Imaginary Creatures

I had a bad headache this morning.

Luckily, I didn't have much work today (actually, I had some but with such headache, I thought it could wait :-P) So, after finishing some work edit, I decided to play with my brand new set of this water color paints I just bought :-)

drawing lab challenge

The last time I painted water color was when I was at school, a long-long time ago. What made me go out and buy this set was a challenge called Drawing Lab Challenge hosted by Gumnut. The challenge is to create art pieces based on a wonderful book, Drawing Lab for Mixed-Media Artrist written by inspiring Carle Sonheim. The book is full of exercises for those who love drawing, amateur or professional, anyone who wants to boost up his or her creativity.

This week's challenge is creating imaginary creatures. I set up the tools with brown paper cut off from a shopping paper bag. The little piece of flower-pattern paper on the right side of the shot is the other side of the bag :-)

drawing lab challenge

Then, I followed the book's instruction : paint random marks on paper. I had no idea what I was doing. The brush in my hand felt awkward and I didn't know how to mix the paints or how to work with water. I just put colors on paper.

drawing lab challenge

While waiting for the paints to dry, I did more on my Moleskine. This time I tried to make it as pretty as I could. I was amazed by how translucent yellow looked and Green looked almost fluorescent. Watching red flowing and blending with dark green somehow gave peace to my mind :-)

drawing lab challenge

Let's come back to the brown paper. The next step was to imagine : from what I painted, could I see imaginary creatures? I didn't see it at first but when I started tracing some paint borders, my creatures took shapes...

drawing lab challenge

Can you see my creatures? The obvious one must be the penguin with his fluffy scarf :-)

drawing lab challenge

And now another spread for my Sketchbook Project!

pavinee_SKETCH11

I had so much fun with this exercise and by the time I finished this fun drawing, my headache was long gone :-)

AEDM2010 : Sketchbook Project page18-19

SKETCH10

I posted this image and then I thought, oops! yellow again? Once one of my clients told me to stop using yellow for awhile. It's not that they hated the color, they loved it but there were too many yellow book covers I had done for them already! I try to stay away from the color as much as I can. But when you love something, you just can't help it. I love white on yellow, black on yellow. Yellow with grey is nice too.

Can't believe how I'm obsessed with the color!

How about you? What is your most favorite color?

SKETCH09

Something upset me yesterday and I couldn't focus on my work so I did these instead. I notice that even when I am in a bad mood, my drawing never shows the dark side of me. I guess my hand just works automatically on something that it already remembers. I wonder if I know how to draw something malicious, like bloody knife or killing scene, will this page look different?

Anyway, it lifted my spirit and today I'm feeling good again :-)

I love drawing black ink on brown paper. It's fun!

11.12.2010

AEDM2010 DAY07 : Sketchbook Project page 14-15

SKETCH08

My illustration instructor once told me that pink was the perfect match with black. I agree with that but I think black can go well with every color anyway. It's the best background and typography in black always looks cool. But since it also looks too strong and generally gives negative feelings, I rarely use it in my job.

I just have a belated thought that what if we have black and white candy wraps that have hidden colors inside for Halloween Tricks or Treats? That must be fun for kids. Maybe, There's already been those kind of candies, I don't know :-P

I enjoy drawing this but, again, I think the details look just too much now :-(

11.10.2010

AEDM2010 DAY05 : Sketchbook Project page12-13

SKETCH07

Seriously, I'm beginning to wonder if I could part with this sketchbook when the time comes. I have never done a complete sketchbook before. I have lots of sketchbooks but only done in really rough sketches in pencil only, no colors, co collage. So, this book is quite special and I start to get possessive of it :-(

These sketches are not so neat. I drew and erased several times until I got this result. Totally love it and I do want to have the creative light bulb on my head ! :-)

These will be done digitally too, hope I can show them soon.
